Maharashtra is the second most populous state in India. It is the largest contributor to Indian Economy with a share of 14% in Indian GDP. Let us dive into its history to understand how it got to its glory.

 Maharashtra has been ruled by many kingdoms since ancient times. It got most prominence when the Maratha empire was established by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. It reached the height of its power in 1760 when it controlled most of India. But after this it stared to collapse due to internal distrust and external aggression from the British.

When the Maratha confederacy fell in 1818 the British took control over it and reorganized it into provinces. One of these provinces was Bombay.

After India a got independence in 1947, Bombay state was reorganized to include various other jagirs and kingdoms like Marathi speaking Marathwada. However, in 1954, massive protests were made by Marathi speaking people against the bilingual state of Bombay. The Samyukta Maharashtra movement was formed to fight for Marathi speaking Maharashtra. Finally, after huge protests and 105 deaths, Bombay state was divided in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Today Maharashtra is the most industrialized state in India. It is home to the largest stock exchange in India and oldest stock exchange in Asia, Bombay stock exchange. It is also a leader in agriculture.

I would like to conclude my speech by saying that we should be proud to be the resident of such a glorious state.
